Iran: Iran is willing to support dialogue between Yemen’s Houthi group and Saudi Arabia to help resolve the escalating conflict between the two sides, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday.

According to Iranian sources, Baghaei made the remarks at a press conference on Sunday.

Baghaei said the solution to the Yemen issue lies neither in intensifying the economic blockade nor in resorting to airstrikes.

Iran believes the Houthi group and Saudi Arabia should engage in dialogue based on a previously agreed peace roadmap, and is ready to provide all possible assistance to advance the process, the spokesman said.

The latest round of conflict between the Houthi group and Saudi Arabia began in mid-July.

On July 13, Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV reported that Saudi Arabia had launched several airstrikes on the runways of Sanaa International Airport in the Houthi-controlled Yemeni capital. The Houthi group retaliated by firing missiles at southern Saudi Arabia.

The two sides carried out repeated attacks against each other in the following weeks.

On Saturday, the Houthi group claimed it had attacked an oil facility in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, using ballistic missiles and drones in response to recent Saudi strikes.

The Saudi-led coalition said the same day that the Houthi claim was misleading and intended to divert attention from the losses the group itself had suffered.
